Any Pandacan Residents going to the procession this coming Friday (January 9, 2009)? This year’s procession will take different route as a precautionary measure to avoid tragic accidents (2 died and many were hospitalized last year).
To accomodate thousands of devotees, the procession will start at Quirino Grandstand in Luneta. Below you fill the schedule I extracted from various news clippings:
* Jan. 8 – the image of the Nazarene would be brought to the grandstand
* Jan. 8 at 5PM – Healing Mass at Quirino Grandstand (Bishop Teodoro Bacani) followed by the traditional “Pahalik sa mahal na Poong Nazareno [A Kiss for the Black Nazarene]” and the vigil.
* Jan. 9 at 7AM – Mass at Quirino Grandstand (Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales)
* Jan. 9 at 830PM – Black Nazarene procession will kick off
* Jan. 9 at 3PM - Black Nazarene expected to be back at Quiapo Church
Different Route
Wide streets are preferred for this crowded procession to avoid accidents. “The planned route will be from be from the Quirino Grandstand, passing through Burgos St., McArthur Bridge, Rizal Avenue, Claro M. Recto, Legarda, Arlegui St., Quezon Boulevard, Palanca St., Villalobos, Plaza Miranda, and then Quiapo Church, where the procession is expected to end at 3:00 p.m.” Route Source: Inquirer.
Black Nazarene Tidbits
- Considered as one of the most dramatic religious events in the country, thousands of devotees from all walks of life go to Quiapo to take part in the procession as a way of strengthening their faith or fulfilling their panata [devotion] to the Lord.
- The statue has been housed at the Saint John the Baptist Church in Quiapo, Manila, also known as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, since 1787.
- came from Mexico, also a former colony of Spain and the center of the Galleon Trade that included the Philippines.
- brought to Manila by a Spanish priest in 1607 on board a ship. The ship caught fire, burning the image, thus its name. Though the image was burnt, the people decided to preserve and honor it.

Some Insider’s Facts…
Did you know that the Quiapo Fiesta Took the Organizers 8 long Months to Plan…
But it turned out that the event needs more months in planning and simulations … back to the drawing board.
Have you heard the news of the Nuestro Padre being held hostage by the faithful?
It was true after-all after the processions’ route was modified courtesy of the devotees.
But that rumor was long been uncovered by the organizers… in fact the Image had to be put inside a large Van which is by the way being tracked by the “Poon”-nappers but in order to lose them, the had to use 2 of this vans and go around the Metro.
And had to be placed in a safe area of a high ranking Roman Catholic prelate … he he he… that I canno’t divulge.
Therefore the image was actually out of quiapo 3 days before Jan 9. Ang galing noh parang NBI ang lansingan.
On Jan 8, while the people was scrabbling of when the original image at quiapo will be transferred to luneta, the image was already at luneta, in-fact, Nuestro Padre is being clothed already with His new gala-robes.
At around 4:45pm, before the healing mass starts, Nuestro Padre was taken out of the van amidst a rousing applause among the devotees while singing Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno.
Grabe ang preparation ng quiapo… but it seems kulang pa rin. My hands and hat goes up to the organizers of the traslastion II…The Quiapo Fiesta 2009.
Congratulations… but more ideas and plans pa…
This is an outright idolatry, blasphemy to God, a violation of the 2nd Commandment of God from His 10 Commandments written in Exodus 20 of any Bible versions, including that of the Catholic and the Latin Vulgate.
God forgive you.
this maybe long due as answer to mr cenon… unless you can speak on behalf of the real feelings of the people participating in the procession and that is if you are very sure of that feeling… then you’re right. It is an outright idolatry.
But if you are judging only through what you see in the expression of the people then what I am sure is that God has the sole authority to judge a human, and by that authority only He can tell if the people are sinning idolatry. What I know is that every feast of the black nazarene, all sects and I mean including born again and protestants, I know cause I know people from other religion who participates in commemorating this event.
If this event unifies the scattered Christian faith… tell me now affirm if this is FAITH OR IDOLATRY.
