On June 15, 2010, schools will open*, but the huge debate between conservative religious groups and the Department of Education is the inclusion of Sex Education into public school’s curriculum. The sex education modules will be experimented in 79 secondary schools and 80 elementary schools across the country. Are the teachers capable of teaching sex education? Are the students (or pupils) ready for that? If you are a parent, what’s your say about this topic?

In a nutshell, religious leaders say that Sex Education will just corrupt the children’s young minds, therefore encouraging them into sexual acts out-of-wedlock. They say, sex education should start at home and it should be the parents’ responsibility to teach the said topics to their children.
On the other hand, education officials said that Sex Education is not all about sex. The topics will be integrated to major school subjects such as Science, Math, and History. For example, teachers will not only teach reproductive organs, but they will also discuss social behavior of other people to increase awareness of sexual advantages and to provide precautionary measures to avoid becoming a victim of sexual assaults. In Math, teachers may also include statistics on teenage pregnancies.
Our Catholic nation seems divided on the issue, what’s your say about this?
* June 14 is declared a National Holiday because June 12 (Independence Day) landed on a Saturday. Hence, no school/work today.
