Reb. Padre Jacinto Zamora

Who amongst us know him?

He’s one of the GOMBURZA, of course!
Not only that… he’s our very own, a Pandaqueño!

And to add more to that pride of owning this holy man, not only as a martyr and a national icon… etch this fact in your hearts.

Not too many people know that Reb. Pd. Zamora was an examiner at the Manila Cathedral and held a high office in the Archdiocese of Manila.

He was also one of the active reformists for Filipino Priest to be given a parish to handle. His stance that a Filipino priest has no difference in terms of knowledge compared to the Spanish friars.

In one occasion a high ranking official asked for an audience with him to ask (actually to force Pd. J Zamora) to allow a Spanish soldier who committed suicide to be interred in a church.

As an obedient Pastor he kindly refused to grant the official’s wish. But the official insisted — to the point of bribing and threatening Padre Zamora. But as a decent Priest he declined and remained firm in his decision. From then on he was put in the watch list of the regime… in the list of people who placed a great threat to the colony. A person who must be eliminated.

More story after the jump ….

During the Feast of Sto Niño de Pandacan, The Parish put into schedule several masses within the day, and that included “LOW MASSES” and the “HIGH MASS“. LOW mass was intended to be celebrated by any priest, but High mass were only for Spaniard priests.

On January 14, while the Famous Banda Pandacan was playing at the Patio entertaining people while waiting for the High Mass of 8:00 am, Reb. Pd. Jacinto Zamora came down from the Pandacan Convento and celebrated the High Mass, triggering irate among the Franciscan Friars. They can do nothing for Padre Zamora held a high office at Manila Cathedral.

But the most significant of all was on February of 1871; After the uprising in Cavite Reb. Pd. Jacinto Zamora was falsely accused as the mastermind of this revolution bringing him to face the court of Spain. After the celebration of the morning mass at Sto Niño de Pandacan, “The Parish Priest” Reb. Pd. Jacinto Zamora was picked up for arrest at the Patio of Pandacan.

From there he was taken to trial together with Burgos and Gomez which eventually led to their execution.

Right before the execution the Archbishop of Manila declared “oneness” with the three priest telling the regime that they were innocent.

The false witness who was also executed professed to the crowd of that day that he was just used and promised liberty if he will implicate Padre Gomez, Burgos and our own Jacinto Zamora.

Upon hearing these facts their executioner knelt before them and asked for forgiveness. The 3 priests said in reply, “do as what you are told … we forgive you.

On February 17 1872, Reb. Pd. Gomez Burgos and Pandaqueño Jacinto Zamora was executed through the Garrote (an iron bar slowly tightened to strangle the victim).

Truly GOMBURZA’s innocence is proclaimed. Thus making God’s promise of crown of martyrdom to our beloved Priests through their death an extravagant glory.
