Pandacan residents such as Aling Angeles Palma and Mary Ann Torcita benefited from Pres. Gloria Arroyo’s “pro-poor” program, where the administration will give P500 to “lifeline users”.

Lifeline users are families consuming less than 100 kilowatts hours of electricity a month.

Administration says the P500 subsidy is an immediate relief to help out the poor, but Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo of the Archdiocese of Manila disagrees, saying it’s just a “doleout” and will not help in the long run.

I agree with him.

The government is right, P500 is just an immediate relief. And it stops right there. Even if the government gives out a thousand peso per poor family, they will still remain poor once it is spent.

Why doesn’t the government just allot the billion pesos extra to pay off some of our debts?
